OSWEC Desktop System

This is my main every-day use computer. It has been running WindowsXP basically since i first got it in 2000.
Originally it was a 1.2GHz Thunderbird with 3x 45GB HDDs and 512MB SD RAM, but over the years it has been upgraded heaps and is now a Athlon 2400XP (2GHz) with about 100GB HDD (had more but moved stuff to file server).
It also started with a Maxi tower case which was maxed out with heaps of harddrives and other optical drives.

I decided to add some color/flair to the case so I got 2 blue cold cathode lights for the inside of the case. I also added 2 small fans at the back of the case for better air flow near the CPU. Here we see the masking up for the adding of the fans and cathodes.

This shows the 2 small fan placements and between them the switch for the cathodes.

Here is a shot from outside the case looking at the back. It shows the fans and the switch.

I decided, seeing there was no window in the side of this case, to do a design in small holes so the blue light would shine though. I decided on the graphical display of my nickname.

To make it easier to drill each hole i first went wround with a hammer and a nail of make a small dent where each hole would be drilled.

Here is the side of the case with the holes drilled.

This is the case with it's side off. You can see 1 cathode across the bar in the middle of the case. The other one went down the case at the front. You can also see how tight it got up near the top of the case with all the drives.

Here we see the side of the case on the system with the lights on. This looks better at night and gives the impression of lots of small blue LEDs.

I decided to mark the pattern in black so it could be seen during the day better.

This is the case with the side on and the light on inside. It is quite a tall case as you can see.

Here we see the whole system on my desk. I later replaced the 19" CRT with a 17" LCD after the CRT died.

I also replaced the case with this one. The main reason for this was to get better air flow (new case has a big 120mm at back), quiter and because after i moved out most of the harddrives i didn't need a big case.
I also swapped it over to fix a problem with the old case that was the result of me putting 240v directly into the motherboard a few years back (frying motherboard, CPU, RAM and the power supply).
