HYDRA Windows 2000 Webserver

I decided I wanted to build a Windows webserver so after asking around my friends for any old parts, i was able to put together the components to build a Celeron-300A computer with a spare 45GB harddrive I had.

Next came the choice of case. I had some old cases leftover from the 486/Pentium era and decided to transfer the contents of my friends large and ugly case (right) to a smaller and better looking one (left).
|
|
I then realised that because I would be accessing this webserver remotely, there was no real need for both a optical drive, or a floppy drive, and thus, with no need for the 5.25inch bays, all that was taking up that level was the power supply at the back of the case. So, I moved it, attaching it to the bottom of the case at the front.
As you can see, I have modified the power supply so that the cables come out the side.

Inorder to give the power supply fan better flow and more room for power cable, I mounted the harddrive on the motherboard side panel standing upright. (Yes, I used screws, not the cable ties as shown)

|
Next came the lowering of the case. I took to it with a hacksaw, tin-snips and a drill and soon had removed the top bays and power supply bay. I then attached the top rectangle of the original case to the new top for reinforcing.
After cutting about 10cm off the sides of the 1-piece outside shell, my case was done.

The back of the case it pretty normal looking, except that on the right you will see a power plug connection. This is the end of a power cable extender that is running from the power supply at the front of the case to the back.

|
Now it was just a matter of installing Windows 2K Advanced Server and IIS, setting up a webserver (and VMWare for extra playing) and to find it a new home next to my main OpenBSD server.
